Overview
2.4-Dichloro-3.5-dimethylphenol (DCMX; dichloroxylenol; 2,4-dichloro-m-xylenol; CAS 133-53-9) is a hindered phenolic antimicrobial/preservative used to control bacteria and fungi in hand soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants and other HI&I formulations, as well as in certain industrial systems where a phenolic microbicide is required.

Supplied as a white to light-yellow crystalline powder/flakes with a mild phenolic odor, it is sparingly soluble in water (~0.2 g/L at 20 °C) but readily soluble in organic solvents (alcohols, ethers, ketones) and dissolves in alkaline solutions, making it easy to pre-dissolve or post-add to surfactant bases.
